La Paz seems to be getting back to normal after a commercially busy and festive December. However, the big question still remains – will it be or won’t it be?

Will the malecon be ready for La Paz’s biggest street festival, Carnaval La Paz 2018? Festivities are to kick off on Thursday, February 8th and phase one of the remodel of the malecon is still not finished.

Carnaval La Paz takes place along the malecon and families usually take the entire area by storm for this traditional event. The afternoon parades, which are slated for Sunday, February 11th to Tuesday, February 13th, have traditionally had their route along the malecon, from Marquez de Leon until the molinito (windmill).

The remodel has been on hiatus over the holidays but workers are expected back to work on January 2nd. Officials say the remodel is almost complete and are not worried about being ready for Carnaval.

If you are looking for some adventure, the grey whales have returned to their traditional breeding and birthing grounds in Baja. Whale watching season in Baja California Sur is just in its first few weeks and already, hundreds of grey whales have already been reported in Laguna de Ojo de Liebre and over 30 in Laguna de San Ignacio.

The official whale-watching season runs from December 15th until April 15th. However, it is usually the second part of February when the greatest number of whales can be appreciated in the waters of BCS.

Whale watching is also possible from Puerto San Carlos and Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos in the municipality of Comondu. Both communities are much closer to La Paz and therefore receive the majority of tourists from here. Those communities are located about 215 kilometers from the state capital. There are several local touring companies with plenty of experience that have whale watching tour packages for you to enjoy!

Keep busy in January and look out for The Baja Citizen Real Estate edition in February.
