La Paz received an unexpected visitor to the port on November 5th. Carnival Cruises made an unplanned port of call at the Puerto de Pichilingue terminal. The cruise Carnival Miracle was suppose to visit Puerto Vallarta but due to Hurricane Vance, she detoured to La Paz instead.

Passengers were seen walking around the streets of downtown La Paz, taking in all that she had to offer. Some 2300 visitors provided a major boost to the area and hundreds could be seen visiting coffee shops, ice-cream parlors, tourist gift shops and strolling along the malecon.

The Director of Operations and Marketing of the Port Authority of Baja California Sur (APIBCS), Carlos Rosales Guzman said that his department is committed to promoting the port of the state’s capital to cruise lines to bring as many tourists as possible to the area. The economic spin-off to other sectors in the city makes this type of tourism very beneficial to the city.

It is the first time Carnival Miracle has arrived to the Puerto de Pichilingue.

The APIBCS official said that during this winter season, they will have around 16 port of calls to attend to at the port. With the unexpected arrival of Carnival Miracle, over 10 000 cruise passengers will have visited the city by the end of the year.

Rosales Guzman, accompanied by the representative of the State Department of Tourism, Ricardo García Castro and city officials, stressed that the excellent coordination and logistics of all government levels helped the committee members meet the cruise and its passengers. Although the visit was a last minute decision, the detour went smoothly and tourists were happy with their port of call.

For his part, the Captain Master Vito of Carnival Miracle acknowledged the responsiveness and attention that they were received with by the Port Authority, which allowed not only the ship to be met smoothly, but also described the great destination and the attention given on land to tourists. He mentioned that there are plans for more cruises to come to the Sea of Cortez in the future that will allow for more visitors to enjoy the area.
