Tequilas – I Love This Bar

By Jim Donahoe

“I Love This Bar” is a song by the famous country western singer, Toby Keith, about his favorite bar. In La Paz and for me, that place is Tequilas Bar and Grill. There is a lyric in the song that says you get a big smile on your face just walking in the door. “Tequilas is a very comfortable place where you can easily meet people and have fun,” says its owner, Pedro Sparrow.
I agree. The variety of patrons range from Mexicans/US/Canadians/Europeans, business owners/day workers, and many connected with life centered around the Sea of Cortez. Their success formula is simple – combine great atmosphere, service, food, drinks and entertainment.
Pedro moved to La Paz 17 years ago having worked in construction in San Diego. He would come into Tequilas, then called Antique’s, and talk with the owner, Tony. Antiques had a colorful history with Tony, who was the Chief of Police in La Paz. The local politicos used to gather in a private bar area, where Tuscanos Pizza now exists. I am sure many deals were consummated in that back room. One night Pedro told Tony, “If you ever want to sell the bar, let me know”. Lo and behold the next day Tony called Pedro and they struck a deal. That was 15 years ago.
On any given day you might meet a boat crew from Europe, a captain from South America, some researchers, local business folks or retired Gringos from everywhere. Cribbage and dominos are the most popular, favorite late afternoon games while the pool players get progressively better as the night goes on.
There was a major remodel project that added a full kitchen and relocated the bar. The large palapa has always been a main attraction and creates a wonderful ambiance. There are a number of flat screen TV’s for sports viewing. As the name implies, Tequilas offers a large variety of tequilas. In fact, there are over 120 tequila brands available. The bar food is prepared by Doña, who has been with Tequilas since the beginning. In addition, Pedro´s wife, Veronica Perpuli, relocated Tuscano´s Pizza Restaurant to one end of the building, three years ago. Now you can enjoy fabulous pizzas right in Tequilas. Bringing the two businesses into one location has been a boost for both.
Tequilas is open Monday through Saturdays starting at 5 PM. On Tuesdays and Saturdays you can enjoy a local band or try your luck in the weekly Pool Tournament on Wednesday night. On other nights you will be thoroughly happy with the music that DJ Juanito churns out. Some evenings you will be treated to a roving Mariachi band. Getting to know Ricardo, the bartender, is a must. Ricardo has been there from the beginning and Gina has been with the team for 3 years. When it is slow in the early evening, you can play dominoes with Ricardo or other patrons or take in a casual game of pool. However, watch out for Ricardo, he is way too good!
If you are looking for a great little neighborhood corner bar, stop by and have some fun at Tequilas. At all times you are able to carry on conversations and actually hear yourself.

Tequilas is located on Ocampo, one block off the Malecon between Mutualismo and Madero. On September 15th, Tequilas will be celebrating their 15th Anniversary. You’re invited to come join the fun. Whether you come for the anniversary or just drop by anytime, you will be assured to see someone you know or meet someone new. I really do… love this bar!
