The annual beach clean-up event was pushed back a month due to the warmer temperatures in September. Ocean Conservancy has partnered with ConCiencia, a local environmental group that has been organizing beach clean ups all over La Paz for years. ConCiencia will be celebrating their 10-year anniversary so there will be lots of fun for the family; an Ocean/Environment Festival plus entertainment, live music and much more.
Dr. Susanne Bennett, the Baja California Sur representative for the Ocean Conservancy, a non-profit organization that promotes the health of seawaters to protect the health of the planet, brought the event to La Paz 4 years ago and it has been growing ever since. “I have a home in La Paz. That is how I got involved. I visit La Paz 8 to 12 times a year. This is the 4th time I am running the event. The first year I ran it with the Crossroads Christian Group. Afterwards, ConCiencia contacted me and said they would like to work together on the ICC. They wanted to join efforts to have an even bigger event. That year it was the biggest event for the ICC in all Southern Baja!”
In 2011 at Balandra Beach, over 25 large garbage bags were filled with everything from beer cans, tons of cigarette butts, diapers, plastic bottles and tops, straws, candy wrappings, clothes, shoes, boat accessories such as buoys. Also, several reported lots of broken glass from beer bottles, which required extra special care and time.
So please bring your friends, family, a hat and lots of sunscreen. Wear athletic shoes if possible, for protection and to walk easier in the sand! Gloves and trash bags will be provided.
If you need transportation to Balandra Beach, a free bus will be provided. Please meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Kiosk on the malecon and 16 de septiembre.
