The renovation of the tourist pier and construction of the Casa del Escultor of La Paz is complete with resources from the Port Authority of Baja California Sur (API BCS) in the order of 4.8 million pesos. The renovations were inaugurated last Friday by the Secretary General of Government, Armando Martinez Vega, who was accompanied by the mayor of La Paz, Esther Ponce Beltran and authorities from all three levels of government.

During the inauguration of the Tourist Pier that included the unveiling of the new monumental sculpture “Perla de La Paz” along the malecon, Mayor Ponce Beltrán welcomed the investment made by the state government via API in beautifying the malecon of the state capital.

Ponce Beltran said, “I am always happy when I am on the malecon, I am happy seeing people representative of our city here. Many paceños come here and I think it is the best framework to celebrate among all of us this work that will greatly improve the image and the quality of the malecon of the city of La Paz.”

She added that according to surveys, it has been established that sudcalifornianos are very proud of their malecon, as well as its wonderful view.  They feel it is a place where they can walk safely and peacefully.  She also said, “we are very grateful for this sculpture which gives us an identity, another bonus to the malecon that enhances our image. But more importantly it adds a cultural touch, so I appreciate this work of art to help improve the image of La Paz and the quality of life of its inhabitants.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of Government, Armando Martinez Vega, who stepped in to represent State Governor Marcos Covarrubias Villaseñor at the event, said that the current state administration has been concerned with generating projects that improve the quality of life of La Paz.

He added that since the beginning of the current administration, the government has been working hard on not only paving the streets of the city, but also on projects that improve the image of the city for tourists visiting the capital.  The renovation of the local pier and placement of the new sculpture that is the product of a man who has devoted much of his life and effort to make more beautiful the malecon of La Paz, Octavio Gonzalez, is just another one of those projects.  Martinez Vega also mentioned that artist Gonzalez will head the new Casa del Escultor, another effort of the State Government through API BCS that is a unique project where sculpture classes will be given free of charge.

According to the specifications released by the Director of API BCS, Jesús González Robles, renovations of the tourist dock included not only the new sculpture but also all the technical installations necessary including removing part of the malecon tiles and replacing them with colored, stamped concrete, an area for children’s playground equipment, a hanging scale to weigh fish, maintenance and gardening furniture, benches, installation of modules for tour companies and new lighting.
