• However, No New Flights to La Paz

As part of their participation representing Baja California Sur at the Tianguis Turistico Mexico 2014 in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Ruben Reachi Lugo, the Secretary of Tourism for the State of BCS announced that they have successfully negotiated with various domestic and international airlines for the arrival of more flights to destinations in the state.

But no new flights to La Paz were announced.

Reachi Lugo said new routes and with increased frequencies in some cases, will ultimately represent a larger volume of passengers who will be arriving to the State. For example, U.S. airline Sun Country based in Minneapolis announced an increase in their frequencies to Los Cabos during the winter months (November to April) of between five to six new flights per week.

Southwest also announced that as of August they will begin operating under the AirTran brand, which is better positioned in the U.S. market and will move to strengthen flights to Los Cabos, with two daily flights from the airport from Orange County in California.

Aeromexico announced three daily flights to Los Cabos from Mexico City, including one flight that will depart at 10:00 pm.  This late-night flight will allow for connections to come in from other domestic and international destinations, mainly Latin American and Europe and therefore improve the presence of BCS in these new markets. Aeromexico will also start flight operations that will connect Los Cabos with Monterrey on a weekly basis to serve the business market.

Interjet announced that their flight that connects La Paz with Mexico City is operating with favorable numbers and during the summer an estimated increase of 10 to 12 percent in the number of seats sold to the state capital and to Los Cabos is expected.

American Airlines is announcing an increase in its number of seats available during the summer, which the airline also announced during the summer of 2013. American Airlines has confirmed it will maintain its steady growth this year and is expected to close a very good summer season and break their seasonal records for the destination of Los Cabos.

Delta Airlines also confirmed the start of a new flight with a new route from John F. Kennedy in New York to Los Cabos starting the month of December 2014. This new flight will increase the presence of Los Cabos on the East Coast of the United States, which could prove great potential for other destinations in Baja California Sur.

Reachi Lugo also met with executives of the Canadian airline West Jet, who showed great interest in opening up a flight from Calgary to Loreto. This flight would carry 136 passengers on a weekly basis, initially for the high tourist season from February to May. This would allow the Pueblo Magico of Loreto to receive a direct flight from Canada and increase the number of passengers to this destination from international destinations.

Reachi Lugo said that with the announcements from airlines coming out of the Tiaguis Turisticos Mexico 2014, the government is estimating that at the end of the year there should be an increase of between 8 to 10% over the previous year in the number of passengers arriving by air to Los Cabos. In real numbers this represents approximately 1 850 000 passengers annually.
