La Paz is ready to play host to part of one of the worlds most important sporting events: Le Tour de France.  L’Etape La Paz by Le Tour de France cycling event will take place on the malecon of La Paz on Saturday, March 30th and Sunday, March 31st.

The participation of two thousand cyclists, both amateur and professional, is expected.

On Saturday, March 30th, the long recreational route of 40 kilometers and short route of 20 kilometers will take place starting at 8:00 am. On Sunday, March 31st, the short stage will be 70 kilometers and the long stage will be 125 kilometers starting at 7:00 am. All events are starting at the kiosk of La Paz, on the malecon and 16 de Septiembre.

The Etape du Tour Series encourages cyclists from around the world to ride like Tour de France legends in over 10 international locations including Japan, Australia, South Africa, Brazil and now Mexico.

The original Etape du Tour ride was established in 1993 and has grown to over 15,000 annual riders as the premiere mass participation ride in Europe. Though the course changes yearly and the ride is always a goal of passionate Tour de France fans as they get to experience the roads just days before the professional riders.

This year, the organization is holding 5 stages in different parts of Mexico, including Mexico City and Acapulco, as part of the Etape du Tour legend series. This will be the first time that La Paz has been invited to host.

The Tour de France is the world’s biggest annual sporting event. Nearly 200 cyclists race over 2,000 miles in just 23 days in France and bordering countries starting in July.

Local organizers say the La Paz stage of the Etape du Tour Series will give the capital city of Baja California Sur the opportunity to once again promote itself to the world. La Paz’s natural beauty and culture richness will be on display and both levels of government along with the private sector will have to work along with Tour organizers to make this event a success.

The La Paz malecón has become a busy place for international sporting events as of late. Besides Le Tour De France, NORCECA beach volleyball has also held 5-day tournaments along the malecon for the past several years and the ITU Pan American Cup La Paz 2019 Triathlon was just held on March 23rd for the sixth consecutive year. Up to 1200 triathletes swam, biked, and ran routes that covered the malecón, the bay in front of the city, and the road to Tecolote Beach.
