The historical library of Redondo Beach, California served as the backdrop as La Paz officials, including Mayor Esthela Ponce Beltran and Agustin Olachea, President of EMPRHOTUR, the La Paz Hotel and Tourist Enterprises Association, joined Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin to officially launch the awareness campaign, named “La Paz: City of Peace and Abundance on the Sea of Cortez,” highlighting La Paz’s safety and the $1 billion in environmentally sensitive developments that will take place over the next five years in La Paz and the surrounding area.

These emerging, environmentally sensitive resorts and master planned developments serve travelers and second-home owners who prize both natural places and a healthy community life. Developments include CostaBaja Resort, Playa La Paz, Azul Cortez, Maravia and Bahia de los Sueños.

Ponce Beltran announced at the event that during her first few months as mayor, she has been working hard in making La Paz a premier tourist destination and added that building tourism infrastructure and security in the city was one of her main priorities during her 4 and a half-year term.

With the constant barrage of bad press Mexico has received at the hands of  U.S. media, it was also reiterated at Redondo Beach that with a population of more than 220,000, La Paz would rank third, behind Murrieta and Mission Viejo and just above Huntington Beach, in comparable California cities with a population between 100,000 and 500,000, as the third safest in murder and manslaughter, according to 2009 stats released by Competitive Analytics.

“The statistics prove what all those who live in La Paz know instinctively, that this is a place where anyone, of any gender or age, can walk safely along the beautiful Malecon boardwalk – or anywhere else in the city.  They encounter nothing but friendly citizens mixing happily with people from North America and other parts of Mexico,” said Olachea.

The Secretary of Tourism for Baja California Sur Rubén Reachi also made the trip to California and emphasized that one of the main attractions to La Paz, besides its natural beauty and the hospitality of the paceños, is the tranquility and security tourists can find. This tranquility makes La Paz an ideal destination for family holidays, retired travelers and for those who enjoy ecotourism activities that take place at the local beaches, islands and desert.

For the launch of the new La Paz awareness campaign in California, a large number of travel agents, tourism promoters and tourism press were on hand covering the event to hopefully spread the word of the peacefulness and diversity of the capital of BCS.
