The La Paz Gold Cup originally started out as a smaller event organized by The Balandra Rotary Club. In 2006, the Rotary Club asked James Curtiss, his father Jeffrey Curtiss (Playa de La Paz), and Ray Novelli (Palermo’s), to help out with the event. It was a great success and in 2007, the name La Paz Gold Cup was registered by Mr. Novelli and the 3 decided to take on the tournament themselves. The 2007 Gold Cup was the largest and most successful fishing tournament in La Paz history with 79 boats competing and over $150,000 in prize money was given away.
The entry fee for the 2012 event for a team of 1- 4 anglers is 12,000.00 Registration is slated for Thursday, September 13th, from 4 pm to 10 pm.
Actual tournament fishing days are Friday, September 14th and and Saturday, September 15th from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Prizes for the event are $1,400,000 pesos for the 1st place catch, $300,000 pesos for 2nd place and $150,000 pesos for the 3rd place catch.
The Gala Dinner, where prizes will be rewarded, will be on Sunday, September 16th from 7 pm to midnight. Once again, La Paz Gold Cup will be offering a special prize to the captain of the 1st place team of $150,000.00 pesos.
It is important to note that thanks to the generosity of their sponsors and all the participants of the La Paz Gold Cup for the past five years, the tournament has been able to donate over $2.5 million pesos to the charities DIF, the Ciudad de los Niños Orphanage and La Paz Rotary Club Balandra. In 2010, the tournament happily announced that they would be adding a fourth charity, Oncoreto, a local group promoting early breast cancer detection through education, to their list of beneficiaries.
