Renovations benefit La Paz’s image and sector development: Rubén Reachi

The next time you head out to the La Paz airport, be prepared for its sleek, new exterior and a more modern and roomy interior.

“The expansion and renovation of the facilities at the International Airport of La Paz is a real achievement that will help strengthen the image of La Paz as a tourist destination and benefit both local users and tourists,” announced Ruben Reachi Lugo, State Secretary of Tourism, at the unveiling of the changes to the La Paz airport.

The International Airport of La Paz’s new facade, baggage claim area, two new carousels and the renovation of the departures waiting area were complete with the investment of 52 million pesos.

The departures area of the airport was expanded by about 180 square meters, which made space for an additional departure gate.  The airport will now have a total of 4 gates for boarding.

Also within the remodeling and expansion of the airport, improvements were made to the exterior of the building, in the air conditioning and lighting systems, and an improved traffic flow pattern was also carved out.

Reachi Lugo said that the tourist sector in La Paz deserves first class facilities, as the airport for many travellers is the first and last impression they will have of the destination.

The government official also announced that during the month of January of this year, the arrival of passengers by air to La Paz increased by 27 percent over the same month last year. In real terms, this represents the movement of over 55 thousand passengers. On average, the International Airport of La Paz had seen an increase of 8% in airline passengers in 2013 over the previous year.

Believe or not, La Paz is the 22nd busiest airport in Mexico.

The Secretary of Tourism wanted to emphasize the commitment that GAP, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, has made in terms of investment to their airports in Baja California Sur. GAP is the operator of twelve airports in Mexico, including the airports in La Paz and Los Cabos. It is a federal government owned company with its own equity capital and legal identity.

Along with GAP investing 52 million pesos in the renovation of the La Paz airport, they are also currently investing more than 20 million pesos in the departures area in terminal 2 at the International Airport in Los Cabos.
