Restaurants open and soon close in La Paz but the best ones remain open.  Although open for only two weeks, the charming new restaurant Dulce Romero, located on Allende between Madero and Serdan, is already showing a lot of promise to be a popular spot for coffee, juices, baked goods, breakfast and lunch.

The owner of the restaurant is 26-year-old Dulce Romero who is assisted by her partner Rene Begarano Herrera.  Both Dulce and Rene graduated from the Instituto Culinario de Mexico in Monterey, Nuevo Leon, in 2010.  The two aspiring restaurateurs also attended the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners in Asti, Piedmont, Italy, in 2011.  Thereafter, the couple worked in restaurants in Italy, Dulce in a one-star and Rene in a two-star restaurant.

About a year ago, Dulce opened a small bakery, which was opened to the general public in the mornings, in her home on Allende.  Dulce then converted the front part of her home into a restaurant which opened two weeks ago.

The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm, and on Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm.  Breakfast is served until 12:30pm; lunch served until 4 pm.  After 4, cold dishes are available until the restaurant closes.  The biggest attraction is fresh home-baked sweet and savory breads.  Croissants are available in the morning for breakfast, served with eggs or jam.  Sandwiches on baguettes or Ciabatta bread are available for lunch with roast beef, turkey breast, hummus, or pesto to name a few items. There is always a homemade soup of the day and a variety of salads.  When available, fresh, organic ingredients are used, much of which is from a farm in Pescadero, owned by Dulce’s father.  Additionally, there are interesting desserts such as tiramisu, arroz con leche, and panacotta, not to mention those decadent sweat breads in the bakery case.  New items are being added to the menu on a regular basis.

The restaurant Dulce Romero has a pleasant patio with a fountain and Wi-Fi.  It is located at #167 Allende between Revolucion and Madero. The phone number is 612 111 7416.
