Over the past week, about 100 new and used blankets, quilts, comforters and sleeping bags were distributed to families in the colonias of Vista Hermosa, Villas de Guadalupe and Marquis de Leon / Laguna Azul.

Located in the hills about 3 miles from downtown La Paz, these communities are dotted with flimsy homes made of tarpaper, wood scraps and plastic. Most of the homes have no electricity, and none have running water. Children, for the most part, sleep on the floor, often without so much as a blanket to keep them warm.

The bedding collected during the first annual Blanket Drive was distributed by Sarah Feiock and Shannon Courney, two enthusiastic volunteers visiting La Paz from Washington State.

About half of the blankets were collected in drop boxes at Allende Books, South Baja Properties and Land’s End Realty, many were brought in by friends who were coordinating the effort out on Paraiso del Mar, and some were graciously donated by a Canadian supporter in lieu of gifts for her family.

While the Drive fell well short of the 300 blanket goal, the smiles on the faces of the children were more than enough to compensate.

Thanks to all who generously donated bedding, space, time and support to help us give the gift of warmth this Christmas.

Wednesday, December 12th is Dia de Guadalupe, a special day to many Catholics, especially Mexicans, as it is the day that the Virgin of Guadalupe (or, La Virgen de Guadalupe, en español) was to have appeared before peasant Juan Diego near Mexico City in 1583.
Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico and the Americas, and her feast day is one of the most important days on the religious calendar for most Latinos. In Mexico, it has been a national holiday since 1859.
This gentle saint is seen as a champion of the poor and downtrodden, and her devotees refer to her in loving diminutives, such as La Morenita. At almost any shrine to Guadalupe, petitioners leave notes thanking La Virgencita for answering prayers, or asking for her help.
