Carnaval La Paz 2019 is just around the corner and all the fun will take place from February 28th to March 5, 2019.

Carnaval is an annual 6-day event held in major cities in Mexico and in other parts of the world (Rio de Janeiro!) that generally occurs the week before Lent with all activities ending by Ash Wednesday, or the start of Lent.

In La Paz, the carnival takes place along the malecon and Abasolo will be closed to traffic each day from about 2pm until the next morning. The theme of this year’s festival will be Grandes Navegantes or Great Navigators. There will be nightly entertainment featuring local and national talent at the main stage at the kiosk of 16 de Septiembre. Plenty of food, games, and cultural events will also be on the agenda.

The traditional carnival parades are always the best part and take place the last three days of the festival; Sunday March 3rd, Monday the 4th and Tuesday the 5th. The official program states that the parades will start at 5:00 pm. Some years they start on time; others they don’t. The parade route is along the malecon of La Paz as well and families will start heading down to save their spots along the sidewalks before 4:00 pm. The parades on Sunday and Tuesday start at Márquez de León with the Monday night parade starting at el molinito. The same participants and floats are in all three parades.
